Modder Resource: UPK files for ME3Explorer Mesh Import

An added note for permissions!  If you are a modder and interested in repacking my files and sharing them, you have my okay.  Please just credit me for exporting and making assets compatible, and always credit the original source (Bioware!) :D

This is a modders resource only.

It's just not feasible for me to make every mesh into a mod for general use, so I thought I'd provide what's the  biggest roadblock to most people: the UPK files and textures.  These can be used to replace meshes using the ME3Explorer.

Tutorial on using ME3Explorer mesh import.  The section on using the UDK can be skipped.

I am using the newest SVN.

The textures will also need to be replaced either with ME3Explorer-texplorer or Texmod.

I should add an extra note, a lot of the textures are just ripped from the game files, they will need to be modified to work.  The spec maps might not always be compatible, and the normal maps will need to be in DDS V8U8 format.

    1. Hi! There is no mesh import for ME2, these are all for modding ME3. The ME2 designation means I took it from ME2.

      Delete
    2. alright, thank you very much! do you think you'll ever do any for me2?

    3. Impossible without a toolkit. At the moment, Warranty Voider has said he has no plans to make ME1 or ME2 mesh import. Personally I'm also only interested in modding ME3, and I'll be moving on after my current playthrough.

      Delete
    4. ahh i didn't know there wasn't a toolkit. thanks!

    5. okay i'm so sorry for commenting again, but i was wondering which .pcc should be used to replace armors. i saw that you said the cat6 armor should replace the reckoner knight one, but i'm not sure what the file name is.

    7. thank you! so, i've been trying to replace the textures for the reckoner-knight armor with the cat6 armor, but it's saying that they only exist for mshep. is there something wrong with my me3 explorer?

      Delete
    8. It's possible both meshes use the same texture (some do), I don't know off the top of my head - I use texmod instead of texplorer. Give it a try!

I also mispoke when I said I replaced Reckoner with Cat6, I replaced N7 Defender. Not saying it won't work, just that I haven't tried it. Sorry for any confusion!

  6. This may be a stupid question, but is there any way to take, say, the Asari commando outfit and load it as a suit of armor to itself, or replace textures/meshes for something like Terminus or Cerberus armor? Or does it always have to be put in as a casual outfit?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can replace pretty much anything, the issue I've run into is textures looking wrong because of incompatible spec maps. For example, replacing Reckoner Knight with Commando makes it glow badly, but the 'cat6' armor works perfectly there because the spec map type is compatible.
The casual outfits give me least issues, which is why I do it, and then coalesced edit the meshes as armor.
      Basically, experimentation is necessary.

    2. Ah, I get it. Thanks so much!

  7. YAY! You are doing such amazing work, ELE! =D I cannot wait to use these. Hey, I noticed that you managed to get the ME2 Kelly hairstyle working in ME3 here (ME3Explorer Linky:) and I was wondering if you have any plans to release that goodness? =)

Also could you pretty, pretty please port the ME2 PROCustomSexy (I think that is the right name…it’s like the jagged bob) hairstyle to ME3 because Bioware’s version looks nothing like the awesome one from ME2. I hate making requests when you’ve already done so much work but know that if you do this I will probably explode from happiness! XP lol

  9. Aw, I tried Inferno, Defender, and Reckoning for Liara's alternate armor and they all had a neon glow to them. Do you know which armor could be properly used as a replacement?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I replaced one of the casual outfits (the intro one) and edited the coalesced.bin to make that mesh an armor - that way it shows up as armor in the locker and has proper stats.

      Delete
    2. Oh! I'll try that when I can. I'm guessing you chose the intro outfit because it's unique to Shepard? At least I don't recall any other NPC sharing it.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, and I usually make the intro outfit the hoodie anyways.

      Delete
    4. It works. :) I also wanted to ask for advice about the breather mask because I tried to replace the N7 breather helmet with it and it also had a neon glow. A few other head gears resulted in the mask being covered by the texture.

      Delete
    5. Cool.

I replaced the N7 helmet successfully, but the textures are more complicated because the armor pieces have color, pattern, and light masks, in addition to the diffuse, spec, and normal. Filling in the right ones with pure black should get rid of the glow. If you can find the tint mask and fill it with white, you can use the color sliders too.

I tried replacing visors and it gave the mask part the visor glow/readout/etc - I don't know how to change it.

      Delete
    6. I managed to find the tint mask and can now use the pattern/tint color sliders. But it seems changing the light color is what causing the neon glow unless it's set to black. It looks like it's because of the spec map? If I replace the spec map with pure black or the original breather spec map, the neon glow effect happens. If I don't replace it, there's a visible image of the N7 helmet scrambled but the neon glow doesn't happen when using light colors.

      Delete
    7. I think the light map is in the alpha channel of the spec map - you should be able to use the spec map of the breather and black out the alpha channel.

      Delete
  10. That took care of the glow from light colors. Liara's mask seems normal but for Jack's, the filter parts are a really shiny grey? Here's a few screens of what I have so far:

    2. Thanks! :) I'll let you know if I find anything.

      Delete
    3. I think I found the issue. When I darkened the blue channel of the spec map for Jack's mask, the filters are no longer a overly shiny grey.

      Delete
    4. hi Night! how did you do to install the mask jack? My concern is that I can not find the file to change the texture masks with me3explorer

  11. Hi ELE, allow me to first say that your Kasumi dress mod is pretty much heaven sent for me, I've been wanting to swap that horrible trash-bag-dress with this one for the longest time.

I'm also a bit afraid to ask (a ME3Explorer and Texmod virgin here -.-' pls be gentle) do I need to have paint.net to successfully use this mod? because I really want to have the Leather Jacket, Asari Commando and Kasumi dress all at the same time available in the wardrobe by swapping them with the outfit I don't really like (like the grubby one -_-;.. )

sorry for the nob question and thanks =)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Heh, np and you're welcome :)

You will need paint.net or some other image editing software like GIMP which is free (I use Photoshop.) For example, the Commando armor needs to be recolored unless you want to leave it the base white.
I recommend checking out Salt's tutorial's on YouTube:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sus1yGuoBgA

Also not every outfit is going to be replacement friendly - either they will have the wrong kind of textures or they are reused on NPCs (like the fatigues, unless you want the Normandy crew to look like a leather jacket gang!) Personally I only replace the intro outfit and the dress, and I swap my PCC files when I want to use others.

    2. HEy! Just a quick question, I have seen how your picture is in the !Alliance colour scheme, Female (Liara theme)" in Ottemis awesome textures. But how did you get your shepard to wear the armor without the helmet? ( Link in your picture) :)

    3. You can add the one with no helmet to your coalesced.bin:

    1. Sorry, I don't have time to write out a tutorial, because its not something I can explain in a short response. You just need to learn how to add armors to the coalesced.bin and add the code I posted.

  16. Hello,

Thank you for all your work. It's really great!
I've tried to change the Intro outfit, and the texture ends up being all wrinckled. Do you know have any idea why? Could you explain me why?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Without knowing more specifics, sounds like you didn't replace the normal map or there's a problem with it.

      Delete
  17. Actually I think the problem is the Skeletal Mesh. I replaced it in the file BIOG_HMF_ARM_CTH_R.pcc, and it seems fine but when I use the flycam in game and go backward enough, I can see it switch back to the initial one.
Which is very weird and means I must be doing something wrong.

I hope I am clear enough, english is not my native language.

    1. Okay, makes sense now. There are 3 LODs, you need to replace all of them.
There should be an LOD menu on the top bar which shows which one you have selected.

  18. I should not bother you, but i have a question that i have thought about.

How do i use Liaras Breather Mask?

Do you think Ottemis have the answare? :D

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi! Ottemis cannot give you any more information than is already provided :)
You use her breather the same way you use the other meshes on here - you need to replace a helmet and its textures. There's a commment string a few replies up about how the custom armor tints and lights works.

      Delete
  19. Do you have a link or do you have time for a quick

    1. Sorry, I wish there was one place I could direct you.

It sounds like you do not have much experience modding Mass Effect, and it can involve a lot of different things (coalesced editing, gibbed save editing, me3explorer, texmod.) And if you have limited previous knowledge there's not much I can do here to explain more advanced things, like adding Liara's mask to the game.

There's a lot of info here, on the Bioware Social Network, through Google searching, and on the ME3Explorer forums and other places - but you have to search through it for what you need. I'm sorry I can't help! Good luck :)

  21. yes, I have modded aother game before. And i guess i must learn. But thanks you have helped me alot ;)

But i must ask, how did you learn all off this, like the Coalesced part and ME3 explorer?

    Replies
    1. I'm glad I could help a little bit!
I learned by picking up info over time - reading the forums and tutorials, and also just trial and error, digging through files, breaking things!
Before that I was already familiar with texmod and texture editing, and a little bit of 3D stuff. Though I've learned a lot trying to make stuff work.

  23. Hi! so I finally got one of your mods working, but it seems I too have the wrinkly issue. Here's a picture: http://puu.sh/3V4QY.jpg

I've tried messing around with the norm file that was in your mod, to see if it would fix it but I keep getting the same result. Any suggestions?

    1. Make sure the normal map is in DDS V8U8 format, it's the only kind that works in ME3.

I want to use Miranda's AAP armour and the N7 adept could you suggest which files would work best?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you mean to replace? The ones I've tried that work without too much fussing are the intro outfit and the dress. Other than that I'm not sure.

      Delete
  25. I see the tutorial, but is there a way to do this for actual armor?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can replace any mesh, the tutorial shows the method with one example, but it works the same for everything.

      Delete
  26. I see, well I downloaded the Miranda outfit file, but I'm not sure what lines I'm suppose to look for and replace with.

I understand the template of the tutorial, but the specifics that involve file names confuses the hell out of me :(.

Also can we get the files for Eva Core and EDI too?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks, the tutorial is really great; I just need to know the how-to process for procuring up the proper file names and such. I'm too scared to try changing my Shepard to any outfit but Liara's right now.

      Delete
    2. Found a link to someone who already did Dr.Eva:
      http://me3explorer.freeforums.org/post3844.html#p3844

      Delete
    3. For some reason the Dr.Eva file only screws up my game. I'm basically stuck with the first default outfit, a couple being in my underwear, and the rest I have the EDI outfit but it's all black. And once I'm done in the armor locker the game breaks.

I'm gonna try a few more times before I try using your method (I'm a total newbie and cannot find the right Miranda file for the life of me), but any help regarding this issue would be much appreciated.

      Delete
    4. The only thing I can think of that might be a problem is my coalesced.bin being modded so I can wear a lot of outfits, but currently my game is so weird right now I cannot mod my coalesced at all, in fact I can delete the file and I will still run the game with it's changed locker room.

      Delete
    5. Tried re-installing the Dr.Eva file many times and strangely enough even if I use the first outfit on both casual and armor it screws up harder and I can't load at all, same with my other saves.

It's only the first save I had that was 'working'. I really don't get this =/

      Delete
    6. Alright so I finally went and tried to fiddle around with the tutorial steps you guys put out, and when I get to the texplorer step, it asks me to scan files or something, whatever.

Every time I do this, I get hit with this error-> "File scan terminated early with error: Texture archive not found in"

So not only can I not use the EDI file I can't even figure out how to do this =(

      Delete
    7. Update! I have figured out half of it! I've managed to make the dress skeletal mesh into EDI's uniform, but when when I applied the textures they just come out wrong (the gloves would be on my back and stuff like that).

I posted on the forums at me3explorer, but no one is answering, so I'm asking here just in case no one gives an answer by the time you come back =) sorry about that!
